Introduction of the Ministry of Economic Empowerment and Job Creation

The department for economic empowerment and job creation was established as a department under the office of the state governor in the year 2007 as a direct response to the due consequences of unemployment with Chief Chris Okereke as the pioneer commissioner. This was a view to improving economic potentials of persons and Ebonyi state at large. As at then, the Department to combat unemployment as well as articulate policies aimed at developing work programmes and schemes, entrepreneurship development, empowerment of youths, women and retirees from civil service through skill acquisition training and assistance in securing loans/credit facilities. These programmes were put in place and directed towards the general economic empowerment of Ebonyi state.

After he was sworn in may 2015 in may 2015 to be precise in August, 2015, His Excellency Engr. (Chief) David Umahi Nweze (FNSE, FNATE) changed the hitherto department of economic empowerment and poverty alleviation to a full fledged ministry of economic empowerment and job creation.

Today and line with the economic empowerment development strategy (SEEDs), the ministry is now being responsible for the following functions.

  1. Poverty alleviation
  2. Job creation
  3. Employment generation
  4. Engagement of youths, women, retired and retiring and any other interested civil servants in the production sectors of the economy
  5. Reactivation of the training centers
  6. Community social development agency and other government agencies that falls within the ministry’s schedule.
  7. Give loans and credit facilities through the micro finance banks.
